BUFFALO, N.Y. — A new Hispanic Cultural Institute is closer to becoming a reality on Buffalo's West side.
The Hispanic Heritage Council raised another $3.8 million for the new center. It brings the total amount raised to $5 million, which is halfway towards the $10 million goal.
The center, which is sent to break ground in 2023, will be the first of its kind in the region. It's expected to include a museum, art gallery, performing arts center and more.
"This is something that's very important. Understanding your heritage, particularly for our young people to understand where they came from," said New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.
The Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York initially unveiled plans for the project in 2019, but the pandemic put fundraising efforts on hold. Since the council is now halfway towards its goal, the new institute is on track to open in 2024.
